2. This Month’s Features

Given that I write about hashtags in my Note from the Editor below, it seems only appropriate to feature Jane Hart’s Excellent slide show:

Note that Commoncraft has also recently introduced Twitter Search in Plain English, a very nice complement to the earlier Twitter in Plain English.

3. A Note from the Editor
——————————————

I’ve become quite fond of Twitter hashtags over the past few months.

For readers who are not familiar with hashtags, they are simply a way to indicate that a message on Twitter is related to a particular topic or group. You append a “#” sign to a word or phrase (no spaces between words) and include it in your “tweet.” #eventprofs, a tag for posts related to the events profession, is one I follow. Go to http://search.twitter.com and search on “eventprofs” and you will see the long stream of different people contributing to the conversation there.
Hashtags help channel the massive flow of information on Twitter in ways that makes it infinitely more relevant and digestible in my opinion. In short, I think  hashtags help to make Twitter a very useful learning tool.

(Note: If you are feeling a little behind on Twitter in general, see the featured resources above.)

I track a number of different hashtags related to my work at this point, and I have recently also set up a tag for the Learning Monitor: #learningmonitor. Going forward, I’ll be tagging most of the items that I plan to include in the Monitor with this hashtag, so that you can learn about them in real time. If you come across great resources, I encourage you to do the same. Naturally, I’ll still continue to round up all these resources and publish them in the monthly e-mail.

If you are not yet using Twitter as part of your learning mix, I encourage you to get into the flow. In the meantime, enjoy this issue of the Monitor and be sure to let me know about any free or low-cost learning opportunities you come across or are involved in creating.

All the best,

Jeff Cobb

Webinars
**************

I used to do a monthly round-up of Webinars, but it just never seemed to work very well with a monthly newsletter format. Going forward, I’ll be noting any interesting Webinars I come across in my tweets (missiontolearn) and will tag them with #learningmonitor. Here, however, are a couple of upcoming Webinars that look interesting:
